Naval Gun Systems

BAE Systems is the U.S. Navy's primary resource for the development and production of major caliber gun systems for use aboard surface combatants. The company's naval gun heritage stretches back to World War II when thousands of major caliber naval guns were produced for the war effort. Today, the company continues that heritage with the production and support of key gun systems, such as the 127-mm Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun Mount.

BAE Systems is leading the development of the 155-mm Advanced Gun System (AGS) for use aboard the Navy's new DDG 1000 destroyer. In addition to the gun, BAE Systems is also leading the development of the advanced munitions to be fired by the AGS. Currently, the Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) is in development to be fired up to a range of 83 nautical miles from the AGS.

BAE Systems is providing the 57-mm Mk 110 Mod 0 Naval Gun System and its 57-mm Mk 295 ammunition for use aboard the U.S. Coast Guard's new National Security Cutter (NSC) and Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC), and as the Close-In Gun System for the U.S. Navy's DDG 1000 destroyer. Lastly, the Mk 110 is selected and being delivered for the Navy's new Littoral Combat Ship (LCS).

Over the last several years, BAE Systems has initiated the design and development of minor caliber naval gun systems to provide the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard with highly lethal defensive systems for ship self-protection.

In 2004, the BAE Systems-led team won the U.S. Navy's competition to upgrade the existing Mk 38 to the 25-mm Mk 38 Mod 2 Naval Gun System Stabilized Minor Caliber Gun system. This major upgrade provides both a stabilized platform and target acquisition capabilities for the Mk 38, giving U.S. Navy surface ships a decisive edge when dealing with small boat threats and port security.
